Decks.

In 2019 I participated in a project called Sekoittamo, under the umbrella of South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences. Members of sekoittamo were in the process of developing a skateboard with an electric motor. Myself, and two other graphic designers, created potential designs for the deck.

Since we got free rein in terms of choosing our designs, I spent time sketching out pages of surrealism-inspired designs, picking my three favorites. I began illustrating in Clip Studio Paint, testing several color palettes. The Smug Moon, for example, was going to be yellow, until I saw how much better light blue was. I had to keep in mind the tapered shape of the deck, along with the placement of the motor and wheels. Since the design had to scale to the size of a big, chunky skateboard deck, I converted each design into scalable vegtor graphics in Adobe Illustrator.

Pusle turned out to be my least favorite of the three illustrations, because it almost feels like it means something. On the other hand, I love Booty Reaper's nonsense design, and alabaster-and-ink color palette.

To our absolute dismay, Sekoittamo went defunct as a result of the pandemic. The electric skateboard project also died before a single board had reached completion.
